Karsten Bernick, a shipbuilding mogul in a Norwegian coastal town, is the model of success – but his veneer of respectability hides a dark secret. On the eve of a bold venture into a new railway, his past comes back to haunt him. Lona Hessel, a former flame, and Johan Toennesen, an exiled business associate, arrive from America, both with knowledge of Karsten’s history that could ruin him. What are their motives in returning, and how will Karsten deal with these dangerous complications to his plans?

"A moment may come, a word may be spoken, and you and all your honour will sink to the bottom, if you don't save yourself in time." - Lona Hessel
