Message from KELLY THORNTON,
Artistic Director of Royal MTC

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 20th anniversary of the Master Playwright Festival, honouring one of the greatest playwrights of all time, William Shakespeare.

Some of the most memorable characters in Shakespeare’s oeuvre are the Rude Mechanicals in his comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This motley crew of tradesmen-turned-players, led by the greatest thespian of all, Nick Bottom, come together to put on the play of Pyramus and Thisbe for the Duke and Duchess on their wedding day. Their antics and adventure, as they rehearse and so passionately perform the play, are some of the most hilarious turns ever to grace a stage.

I am reminded of these lovely souls, as players across the city have enveloped themselves in the masterful texts of the Bard, wrestled and rehearsed the exquisite language, and now take to the boards to unleash their plays in the festival.

I welcome the many participating companies that have made this year’s festival, our final edition, the largest yet. And to you, our audience, thank you so much for joining us and for sharing in the delight of celebrating William Shakespeare’s incredible body of work, as well as the plays influenced by his canon. I encourage you to take in as many offerings as the festival provides, and to relish and revel in his artistry!
