Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre was born in 1802 in Villers-Cotterets, France. His grandmother Marie-Cesette Dumas was an enslaved Haitian woman. Alexandre’s father Thomas-Alexandre served in Napoleon’s army where he became a general and made history as the highest-ranking Black officer in Europe. His mother ensured that he got a thorough education, and in 1822 he began pursuing writing as a career. He took advantage of the newspaper industry by writing serial stories. Each day, a new chapter or story would appear, allowing him to write bite-sized pieces, while he reflected on the social issues of the day. His stories addressed the stigma against divorce, illegitimate children, racial conflicts and other social justice issues. Alexandre wrote approximately 300 essays, plays, serial novels and travelogues, but is best known for The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. He’s also known for The Man in the Iron Mask, one of the stories included in The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years, a sequel to The Three Musketeers.
