1601. The eve of the execution of Shakespeare’s lover and Elizabeth I's lover. The Queen, Shakespeare and his actors… together, for one night.
For years, Elizabeth has had to suppress her vulnerability for fear of being dismissed as "too feminine."
For years, Ned has portrayed Shakespeare's leading ladies, suppressing his manhood for fear of presenting as "too masculine."
In Findley's award-winning play, Shakespeare fights for his lover's life, as Ned and the Queen turn to each other in their struggle with their gender roles, and the right to love whom they love.
