Apprentices

Applications are open between February 27 and April 7, 2025.

The Jean Murray-Moray Sinclair Apprenticeship Program is a paid job auditing experience for emerging artists and craftspeople to gain exposure to professional theatre work. Most applicants are recent graduates of post-secondary theatre training but applications will be equally considered from those with other theatre experience who are looking to expand their knowledge, or a background in artistic disciplines outside of theatre who wish to learn more and pursue a theatre career.

To apply, you must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and a resident of Manitoba. Your application should include the completed form, a letter of reference, a resume or CV, a written statement (see the application for specifics) and portfolio/supporting material for some disciplines. Full checklists for the application and details about each program are in the downloadable file.

If you have any questions or face barriers in the application process, please contact:

Ksenia Broda-Milian, Education and Enrichment Manager by email (preferred) or phone: 204 954 6413.

In 2025/26 we are not seeking any apprentices on Life of Pi, Rogers vs RogersWonderful Joe, or Rubaboo

IMPORTANT NOTES

If you are trained in stage management and looking to begin your career as a CAEA/Equity apprentice SM, please do not apply here but instead forward your cover letter and resume to Director of Production Allison Loat

Please note that we do not offer playwriting or acting apprenticeships. If you are interested in performing on Royal MTC stages, see our auditions page.  We will open submissions for playwrights' pitch sessions in the spring.

The assistant position is a job opportunity for emerging professional artists and craftspeople which allows for exploring and enhancing their artistic practice, production-specific mentoring by a professional artist in their field, and making a tangible contribution to a Royal MTC production. Mid-career and established artists transitioning to directing from another role may also apply.

Eligible assistants must:

  • Able to read drawings, patterns, plots as applicable
  • Familiar with the tools and materials in their area of design

Ideally candidates will have at least 3 years of demonstrated professional experience and set/lighting designers be able to use CAD (Vectorworks or AutoCAD).

Application Process

Applications must be submitted by email to artistic@royalmtc.ca no later than May 9, 2025 with the subject line Assistant Application [First Name] [Last Name].

The application and all supporting materials must be submitted together by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Submitting an application does not guarantee you will receive an assistant position. Having received an assistant position in the past does not guarantee you will receive one again.

Assistants receive a fee of $3000 with the exception of productions with a shorter residency.

An assistant working on a co-production would be required for Royal MTC/Winnipeg-specific involvement only. In the case that the assistant would like to assist with the partnering theatre as well, they are responsible for getting approval from that theatre and professional they are working with, as well as their own travel and accommodation.

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is committed to equity and inclusion. We encourage submissions from diverse artists who self-identify as equity-deserving candidates.
