Daan (Tagalog for “the road”) is a vibrant celebration of musical theatre, led by powerhouse performers Ma-Anne Dionisio and Stephanie Sy. This one-night-only concert blends beloved Broadway hits, exciting contemporary works from the Filipino-Canadian canon, and a thrilling sneak peek at Rizal, our upcoming musical about the life and times of José Rizal. Backed by a live band, with book and music by Winnipeg’s own Joseph Aragon, Daan celebrates Filipino culture while showcasing the past, present and future of musical theatre. This one-of-a-kind concert and creative unveiling offers a rare glimpse into the making of Canada’s next great musical, and the voices shaping the next chapter of Filipino-Canadian theatre. Stephanie Sy is a Filipino-Chinese Theatre and Film artist raised on Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg. Her 20 career began on stage, predominantly in musical theatre, working all across North America. Royal MTC productions include Waitress, Romeo and Juliet, The Penelopiad, Vietgone (with fu-GEN/Hope and Hell). Stephanie was one of the 2021 recipients of The Harold Greenberg Fund where she wrote, directed, and produced her very first short film, Knots, that was screened in film festivals all over North America.
Philippine-born Canadian actress Ma-Anne Dionisio is best known for portraying the role of Kim in the Canadian Premiere of Miss Saigon at the Princess of Wales in Toronto. She has since graced stages all over the world, including Broadway and London’s West End in productions of Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Flower Drum Song, Sunday in the Park With George, Martin Guerre, Miss Saigon, West Side Story, Mamma Mia!, Grease, Cats and The Secret Garden. She earned the Dora Award for her most recent portrayal of Diana in the Toronto production of Next to Normal (Mirvish/Musical Stage Co). Daan: A Journey Through Song will be Dionisio’s first Royal MTC appearance.
