YOUTH PROGRAMS

All of Royal MTC's youth programs are free! Please see below for details about each and how to apply.

YOUNg Expressions - applications open in august 2022

A group for grade 10-12 students to see theatre, discuss and (you guessed it) express! Everyone has a voice, and yours matters. As a Young Expressions participant, you’ll get a VIP ticket to attend select opening night performances for free. Broaden your mind, strengthen your observational skills, and connect with artists and theatre reviewers as one of the first people to see our professional shows. After each show we’ll gather to write about or discuss our reactions, and later create a written or visual piece to share your opinions and experiences! Young Expressions will take place on select Thursday evenings and one Saturday afternoon during the season - exact dates will be released with the application.

Backstage pass - applications open in august 2022

Our popular theatre exploration series for grade 11 and 12 students! Discover how artists and craftspeople create the worlds you see onstage. Attend engaging workshops led by theatre professionals and see Mainstage productions for free! No experience is necessary, just a love of theatre, curiosity, and willingness to learn and have fun! Participants are asked to commit to the whole series (dates will be on the application); they meet at MTC on select Wednesday mornings throughout the year, do a workshop, see the 2:00 pm matinee, and then attend a talkback. Backstage Pass takes place during the school day, so participants will need permission from both their school and guardians to attend.

Here's what past participants have had to say:

"Seeing these shows and learning about theatre and all different aspects of it and making friends at the same time is the best way to spend my days and I’m so thankful for this opportunity."

"It was really fascinating to see the behind-the-scenes stuff. I was so overwhelmed with joy the entire time!"

"This program was an absolute pleasure to take part in. I loved meeting new people and especially taking awesome workshops with amazing people! Would 100% recommend it to anyone who is considering it!"

22/23 Youth program application coming soon!

Our application will be posted in August. If you're keen to start early, each application must include a letter from you, outlining why you want to participate in the program and a reference letter from a teacher outlining your enthusiasm, commitment, ability to collaborate, strengths, and challenges to tell us why you and our youth programs are a good fit!

Discounted Tickets

Youth under 18 who attend performances casually can select a discounted ticket price when booking their seats. Anyone aged 18-29 is eligible for our Theatre Under 30 program to access $20 tickets for selected performances throughout the season. Find out more about Theatre Under 30 here

NEXTGEN FRINGERS: SUMMER OPPORTUNITY AGES 16-23

The Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, presented each July by Royal MTC, strives to break down traditional boundaries between audiences and artists, encouraging open dialogue between theatre-goers and theatre-creators. If you are aged 16-23 and love the Fringe - or if you've never been and want to see what it's all about - then NextGen Fringers is the program for you!  NextGen Fringers get free tickets to Fringe plays, connect with other young theatregoers, and share their experiences to help promote the festival and spread the word about one of our favourite ways to spend the summer. Applications for 2022 are now closed; check back in May 2023!
